Restoration of District No. 5 Schoolhouse

The District No. 5 Schoolhouse underwent a full restoration between 2014 and 2019 and now serves as the headquarters for the Underhill Historical Society. The restoration was funded by the community through the Friends of the Old Schoolhouse, founded by Pete Czaja, Roger Frey, and Susan Thomas in 2013 for the preservation effort. In 2018, the District No. 5 Schoolhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Underhill Interviews

The historical society is currently documenting interviews with local residents who have lived in Underhill for decades with memories of past generations and events from town. If you would like to participate, or know someone who should be interviewed, please reach out and help us preserve Underhill’s oral history. Uncovering Underhill’s Schoolhouses

Early Underhill was home to 15 one-room schoolhouses, most of which are now lost. The historical society has undertaken a project to research and uncover the history of these buildings so that their history might be preserved, even if the structures are not. The project culminated with the creation of a schoolhouse storyboard, which is viewable in the historical society’s museum.

Udney Hay Historic Marker

Lt. Col. Udney Hay moved to Underhill, VT in 1796. Having served as Deputy Quartermaster General in the northern department, he was personally acquainted with many of the prominent figures of the Revolution, including George Washington, who personally recommended to the Continental Congress in 1778 that Hay be appointed Quartermaster General of the entire Continental Army. After the war, Hay became a prominent Democratic Republican politician in Vermont, serving as Underhill representative to the state legislature from 1798-1804. The historic roadside marker dedication ceremony was held at the site of Hay’s Underhill residence September 13th, 2025.
